Slight spoiler trailer here (inspiration for film)
This movie may not look like much to you at your local video rental store or in your Netflix new release list but if you like psychological thrillers that twist over and over then you should definitely give it a shot. The trailer doesn’t even really do the film itself justice. It reminded me of movies I love like Memento where the puzzle pieces of the story don’t quite fit until the very end and the pace just keeps speeding up as it goes along. It also reminded me a bit of Donnie Darko in it’s ability to kind of sneak up on you with artistic shots and piano music ever drawing you into the plot.
Believe it or not the story really has little to nothing to do with the Bermuda Triangle as you might assume from the title, it’s much less about the paranormal as it is about psychological breakdowns and the hell we create in our own minds. I think the name triangle is more metaphorical and symbolic rather than a new Bermuda Triangle b-horror movie.
I don’t want to give too much away so I will just give the smallest summary I can. The story starts out with Jess (George) who boards a small yacht for the day on a trip in the Atlantic with her boyfriend and his friends. While on board a giant storm comes out of nowhere flipping the boat and leaving it’s passengers stranded until a strange ocean liner shows up bearing the ominous name Caligula. The party is forced the board the ghost like ship only to find themselves thrust into a dizzying struggle to find the truth and stay alive.
Melissa George does a wonderful job portraying the mysterious single mother Jess who unravels loop by loop evolving into different roles as the film goes on. Jess’s character is not at all what she appears to be but then again neither is the entire film which masks itself as a murder thriller on a creepy ship but turns out to be much more complicated and well written than that. I absolutely loved this film and am always pleased to be surprised by a movie that I may not have had high hopes for going in that turns out to be notable and very impressive.
Bottom Line: HIGHLY RECOMMENDED MYSTERIOUS THRILLER – GO RENT IT
