Vanity Fair March Cover: 10 Young Women That Were Missing

I don’t know if you have or haven’t heard about the all white, all thin, all attractive March issue of Vanity Fair’s Young Hollywood editorial but I personally found it offensive. There are plenty of beautiful talented young women in Hollywood that didn’t make the list probably because of their skin tone or weight. And to be honest the girls that made the list aren’t exactly who I would consider the most successful in Hollywood right now anyway. The women that did make the list were: Abbie Cornish, Kristen Stewart, Carey Mulligan, Amanda Seyfried, Rebecca Hall, Mia Wasikowska, Anna Kendrick, Emma Stone, and Evan Rachel Wood. Here is just a short list of 10 young women that should have been on the list and why: (in no particular order)

  • Gabourey Sidibe – 26 Years Old – You really don’t get much more successful this year and last than this amazing young actress that has been up for multiple prestigious awards including Best Actress at this years Academy Awards for her break-out role in Precious: Based on the Novel Push by Sapphire. Sidibe was featured in an article in the issue but apparently didn’t make the Vanity Fair cut to be on the cover which is needless to say: just plain wrong.
  • Selena Gomez – 17 Years Old – Besides having a major starring hit role on the Disney Channel’s Wizards of Waverly Place and having a best selling album Ms. Gomez is soon to be starring in the film Ramona and Beezus and played the voice of Helga is 2008′s Horton Hears a Who! With all that she should have made the list and is completely forgiven for making her film debut in a Barney and Friends special.
  • Keke Palmer – 16 Years Old – Aside from starring in the adorable TV show True Jackson VP on Nickelodeon Keke has a recurring role as Nikki in Tyler Perry’s Medea films plus she had the starring role in 2006′s Akeelah and the Bee. Keke also happens to have a couple of upcoming films and is well on her way to becoming a budding successful actress.
  • Miranda Cosgrove – 16 Years Old – Having one of the top 15 highest rated shows on cable is quite an accomplishment for a young teen but that’s not all Miranda Cosgrove has going on. Miranda has a growing movie career soon to play the voice of Margo in Despicable Me and she will soon be releasing her own pop album. This young lady is such a great role model that she was invited to the 2009 White House corespondents dinner. Impressive.
  • Freida Pinto – 25 Years Old – Starring as the strikingly beautiful Slumdog Millionaire’s Latika in 2008 was strangely not enough to include this 25 year old on Vanity Fair’s list. She has four upcoming films (including a Woody Allen film and Miral opposite Willem Dafoe) film and  and will surly be an actress to watch in the future.
  • Jennifer Hudson – 28 Years Old - Okay so maybe Jennifer isn’t necessarily youngest compared to some of the girls on Vanity Fair’s list but 28 is far from old and the woman has an Oscar for goodness sake which is more than you could say for any of the girls listed up there. WTH? Plus she can definitely out sing any girl on that list or this one.
  • Alice Braga – 26 Years Old – Alice is without a doubt an amazing versatile actress that has chosen typically darker and more demanding roles. I love the fact that she can go from playing a refugee survivor opposite Will Smith to playing the blinded escort in Blindness and still pull of being a bad-ass black-ops solider in the New Predators film. I am a big fan.
  • Alexa Vega – 21 Years Old - Ms. Vega has been in the business for a while as a child actress in films like Spy Kids and Sleepover but has in recent years moved up to more mature indie films like Marrying God and Repo: The Genetic Opera. I thought she was really funny on the most recent episode of The Middle too where she played a super chipper cheerleader.
  • Melonie Diaz -  25 Years Old – I loved Melonie in 2008′s Be Kind Rewind with Mos Def and Jack Black. She held her own comically and went on to play in the also very funny Hamlet 2. I have not gotten a chance to see her breakout roll as Anna in 2007′s boundary pushing IBTC but I have heard good things and her supporting role on the final season of Nip/Tuck was pretty memorable.
  • America Ferrera – 25 Years Old – America really had a breakout roll in 2002′s Real Women Have Curves but has since had a successful and booming career in movies and on the hit TV show Ugly Betty. She is the kind of actress that isn’t afraid to make fun of herself or play the role of an ugly duckling (pun intended) which in the image conscious Hollywood world is deserving of respect.

Keep in mind this is just a short list of some of the women in Hollywood that were snubbed by Vanity Fair. I find the whole thing distasteful and disrespectful as do a lot of people who have commented about the article on the web. Feel free to leave comments just in-case I left anyone out.

I agree. The list of all thin white females was a bit obvious. You did a good job naming more women that deserved to be on the cover. I hope Vanity Fair got the message.
