I absolutely love 3-D movies and when I first saw the trailer for Disney’s A Christmas Carol in 3-D I was incredibly excited to see it. Plus with Jim Carrey featured as the voice of Scrooge it sounded even better. With a great cast and of course the awesome special effects it made for a great movie and fun experience. I think this movie stays true to the novel more than any other version I have seen but that has it’s downside since the novel is in essence a ghost story with many creepy characters and situations.

As with most versions of A Christmas Carol the story follows pretty much the same plot with the cruel old Scrooge character hating Christmas and pretty much anything jolly who experiences a night of spirits sent to save his soul from an eternal fate walking the earth in chains.

Now I have to say that for little kids this movie is a bit too scary. I was on edge with a few of the scenes and I am a hardened horror movie enthusiast. Marley is the first ghost to visit and he doesn’t look too good when he shows up. His jaw even comes off in one scene which was definitely cringe-worthy. Plus the devil-like horses that signal the last ghost’s arrival have evil looking red eyes and chase Scrooge through the empty streets of London. And of course Death himself is very creepy especially in 3-D with his little minions Want & Ignorance under his cloak are very scary and jump out at the screen.

For older kids, teens and especially adults it’s a great movie and really fun to see in 3-D. It really helped put me in the Christmas spirit and the humor that Jim Carrey brings to it like he does with all his films is as always enjoyable. The message the Dickens put in his novel about Christmas being a time of love and giving that should last all year long comes through in this movie really well and I think we could all stand to hear that message every now and then.

Bottom Line: MAYBE NOT FOR YOUNGER KIDS BUT GREAT FOR THOSE WHO ARE KIDS AT HEART
